Astronaut Neil Armstrong received the first Congressional Space Medal of Honor from President Jimmy Carter, assisted by Captain Robert Peterson. Armstrong, one of six astronauts to be presented the medal during ceremonies held in the Vehicle Assembly Building, was awarded for his performance during the Gemini 8 mission and the Apollo 11 mission when he became the first human to set foot upon the moon.

When a malfunction caused Neil Armstrong to lose control of the Lunar Landing Research Vehicle during a training exercise at Ellington Air Force Base, he was forced to eject. Later analysis showed that, had he bailed 0.5 seconds later, he would have almost certainly been killed. Seemingly unfazed, Armstrong was back in his office within an hour to complete the day’s paperwork. His only reported injury that day came from biting his tongue.
